EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
