A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
