Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
